Welcome to the second real post on the verbs of motion in Russian. I wrote my first post on the verbs of motion here.
Sorry, but verbs of motion are a pain to explain. They carry so many nuances, requiring a lot of practice.
There will be many, many more posts to come on this topic.
In the last post I wrote about the unidirectional verb идти.
In this post I’m going to write about a verb related to that verb, but with a different function.
This verb, unlike идти, is a multidirectional verb and it’s the verb ходить, which, just like идти, means to go, to walk, yet not in the same way!
It instead means to do these actions to and back and in many different directions.
| This is a multidirectional [motion in many different directions] verb. Thus, it can be used to describe motion in a general sense. Additionally, it is used to describe a round-trip process [there and back]. |
Let’s first look at its conjugation:
| ходить [to go] |
| хожу | ходим |
| ходишь | ходите |
| ходит | ходят |
Some examples to help you better understand this verb:
| Я хожу в школу каждый день. I go to school every day. |
| Юлия редко ходит на концерты. Yulia rarely goes to concerts. |
| Дети никогда не ходят в библиотеку. The children never go to the library. |
| Иногда мы ходим к бабушке. Sometimes we go to grandma’s. |
| Вероника часто ходит в парк пешком. Veronica often walks to the park. |
Did you notice something? The examples all contained adverbs of frequency. Yes, this verb tends to be used whenever frequency is mentioned.
| иногда | sometimes |
| часто | often |
| редко | rarely |
| всегда | always |
| регулярно | regularly |
| постоянно | constantly |
| никогда | never |
| почти никогда | hardly ever |
| обычно | usually |
| каждый день | every day |
| по выходным | on the weekends |
| каждый понедельник | every Monday |
| по понидельникам | on Mondays |
| по утрам | in the mornings |
Well, I think that is enough for now.
Little by little, we will be exploring these verbs and then moving into their subtle uses.
See you in the next post!
