  • Russian Time Elements: Seasons of the Year

This blog post is dedicated to the seasons of the year, времена года. No more dilly dallying. Let’s begin!

We’ve learned the days of the week.

Eventually, we’ll be learning the months of the year.

    Seasons of the Year
    nounatt. adj.tr.
    веснавесеннийspring
    летолетнийsummer
    осень f.осенийfall/autumn
    зимазимнийwinter
Russian uses adjectives in places where English would use a noun to act as an adjective. For example, winter weather = зимняя погода.

    Pretty easy, right?

Let’s look at some examples so this all becomes crystal clear.

Шорты, рубашки и сандали – летняя одежда.
Shorts, T-shirts and sandals are summer clothes.
Рождество и Новый год – зимние праздники.
Christmas and New Year are winter holidays.
Это прекрасный осенний вечер в Одессе.
It’s a wonderful fall evening in Odessa.

    More examples:

Зима, на мой взгляд, немного скучная.
Winter, in my opinion, is a little boring.
Детям больше всего нравится лето, потому что они не учатся в этом времени.
Children like summer most of all because they don’t study during this season.
Осень – моё любимое время года.
    Autumn is my favorite season.

    …

How about expressing in (season)? It’s not logical. In Russian, for some odd reason, you need to use the instrumental case with seasons.

    когда?
    when?
    веснойin spring
    летомin summer
    осеньюin fall/autumn
    зимойin winter

    Some examples for you:

    Осенью с деревьев падают листья.
Leaves fall from the trees in autumn.
    Зимой люди ходят в пальто.
    People wear coats in winter.
    Летом многие отдыхают на море.
Many people vacation at sea in summer.

I guess that’s all for this quick and useful post.
