The third Russian conjunctions post has arrived on my blog!
This post is all about giving reasons for something. And there are many reasons to do so.
Let’s look at them all and then you’ll be a pro at this! 🙂

The conjunctions below, unless noted, are neutral in style.
| потому что [because] |
This conjunction is always preceded by a comma.
The comma can, however, be placed in between потому and что to add emphasis, such as because of the fact that. This isn’t as common, yet it’s still useful to know.
This conjunction can never be placed at the beginning of a sentence when connecting two clauses.
| Мы должны пойти, потому что они пригласили нас на ужин. We have to go because they invited us to dinner. |
| Мы должны пойти потому, что они пригласили нас на ужин. We have to go because of the fact that they invited us to dinner. |
| из-за того, что [because, due to the fact that] |
| Мы должны пойти из-за того, что они пригласили нас на ужин. We have to go because they invited us to dinner. |
| так как [since, because] |
This conjunction is always preceded by a comma. And it can start a sentence.
| Мы должны пойти, так как они пригласили нас на ужин. We have to go since they invited us to dinner. |
| Так как у нас нет времени на чтение, мы слушаем аудиокниги. Since we don’t have time to read, we listen to audiobooks. |
| раз [since] |
This conjunction is always preceded by a comma. And it can start a sentence.
Note: This conjunction is informal.
| Мы должны пойти, раз они пригласили нас на ужин. We have to go since they invited us to dinner. |
| Раз Вы отсутствовали на работе, мы не закончили проект. Since you were absent from work, we didn’t finish the project. |
| поскольку [since] |
This conjunction is always preceded by a comma. And it can start a sentence.
Note: This conjunction is formal.
| Мы должны пойти, поскольку они пригласили нас на ужин. We have to go since they invited us to dinner. |
| Поскольку в русском падежи, надо их хорошо знать, чтобы говорить на чистом русском. Since there are cases in Russian, you need to know them well to speak correct Russian. |
