We learned cardinal numbers in our last lesson. In this one, we’ll be learning ordinal numbers.
| ordinal numbers [signifying order] are numbers such as first, second, third, etc. |
There’s good news: ordinal numbers function just like adjectives. That means they agree in gender, number and case.

Some examples to help you better understand everything:
| Первый день недели – это понедельник. The first day of the week is Monday. |
| Третий месяц года – это март. The third month of the year is March. |
| Июнь – это шестой месяц года. June is the sixth month of the year. |
| Be careful with третий. Concerning its forms, it’s quite peculiar. It looks kind of like a soft adjective, then forms like a short-form adjective. But it’s very unique! It follows a rare pattern that only a handful of other adjectives do. |
| The word for final, last is последний. And this is a soft adjective. |

The following ordinal numbers are on the rare side. The reason why we should learn them… because the year 2000 wasn’t too long ago! 25 years – quarter of a century – but not an extremely long time.

| Notice that in Russian one says the two thousandth year, as opposed to the year two thousand. |
I mentioned at the beginning that ordinal numbers function just like adjectives. That means, as you probably noticed from the examples, that they decline in the same way.
In the next section, I’ll list two fully declined adjectives: one basic [первый] that all other ordinal numbers follow and the declension of третий, because it’s a rare exception.
