Continuing our verb conjugations, let’s move to another group of verbs sharing a similar conjugation pattern.
Verbs ending in –чь can all be grouped together.
They will end in either –гу or –ку in the я form and this ending will recur, with a slight change, in the они form.
Let’s start with the verb мочь [to be able].

| Я могу читать, писать и говорить по-русски. I can read, write and speak Russian. |
| Она не может ходить, у него сломанная нога. She can’t walk – her leg is broken. |
| Вы можете позволить себе поездку на Сардинию. You can afford a trip to Sardinia. |
Verbs following a similar conjugation pattern are:
| помочь* [to help], стричь [to cut], беречь [to keep], etc. |
| Я с удовольствием помогу вам с русским! I will gladly help you with Russian! |
However, the last two are a little different.
| стричь [to cut] |
| стригу | стрижём |
| стрижёшь | стрижёте |
| стрижёт | стригут |
| Я стригу раз в месяц, а мой брат – каждые две недели. I get a haircut twice a month, while my brother gets one every two weeks. |
| беречь [to keep] |
| берегу | бережём |
| бережёшь | бережёте |
| бережёт | берегут |
| Эдуард ни пьёт, ни курит, но регулярно упражняется. Он бережёт здоровье. Eduard neither drinks, nor smokes, but regularly exercises. He takes care of his health. |

The verb жечь [to burn] has a peculiar conjugation. You will see this verb used with prefixes to create a variety of meanings. Those meanings will be observed in a later post.

| Её красота и манеры жгут мне сердце. Her beauty and manners fire up my heart. |
| Солнце так и жжёт сегодня! The sun is scorching today! |
Moving now to the verb печь [to bake].

| печёт | пекут |
| Бабушка печёт самые вкусные пироги. Grandma bakes the most delicious pies. |
Verbs following a similar conjugation pattern are:
| привлечь* [to attract], отвлечь* [to distract], течь [to flow], etc. |
| Она привлечёт мужчин своей красотой и манерами. She will attract men with her beauty and manners. |
| Видеоигры отвлекут нас от наших проблем. Video games will distract us from our problems. |
| Из раны течёт кровь! Blood is flowing from the wound! |
