Now that we’ve tackled all the regular verb endings, we’re going to be tackling slightly irregular verbs in Russian.
The best and most effective way to master Russian verb conjugation is to group verbs with similar conjugation patterns together.
Russian doesn’t really have a lot of truly irregular verbs – most are just slightly irregular. I say slightly because although there is some alternation in the conjugation of many other verbs, the endings remain pretty consistent to what we learned previously.
Let’s start with verbs ending in –авать. We’ll start with давать [to give].

| Маша даёт нам знать, что вернётся домой в 9 часов. Masha lets us know that she’ll return home at 9 o’clock. |
| Они дают мне что-то поесть. They’re giving me something to eat. |
Other verbs following this conjugation pattern are:
| преподавать [to teach], продавать [to sell], сдавать [to take], передавать [to pass], отдавать [to give back], раздавать [to hand out], подавать [to serve], задавать [to ask], etc. |
| Make note of the very useful expression задавать вопрос [to ask a question]. Я задаю им вопросы об экзамене. [I ask them questions about the exam.] |
| Борис преподаёт русский язык в университете в Рыме. Boris teaches Russian at the university in Rome. |
| Почему ты не продаёшь эту старую машину? Why don’t you sell this old car? |
Let’s continue with verbs ending in –навать. We’ll start with признавать [to admit].

| Я признаю, что ты прав в этом деле. I admit that you’re right in this matter. |

Other verbs [not many] following this conjugation pattern are:
| узнавать [to recognize], сознавать [to realize], etc. |
Let’s continue with verbs ending in –ставать. We’ll start with вставать [to get up].

| Я каждый день встаю в 6 часов. I wake up every day at 6 o’clock. |
| Почему вы так поздно встаёте? Why do you get up so late? |
Other verbs [not many] following this conjugation pattern are:
| отставать [to delay], переставать [to stop], уставать [to tire], etc. |
| Они легко устают, потому что они не в хорошей форме. They tire easily because they aren’t in good shape. |
| Я перестаю смотреть телевизор в 11 часов вечера. I stop watching television at 11 o’clock in the evening. |
