Russian Cases: Accusative – Uses

The accusative case, винительный падеж, is the fourth of the six Russian cases. It answers the following questions: кого? and что?
It serves the purpose of indicating the direct object in a sentence.

And, of course, it has other uses. We’ll discover them down below.


The accusative case is used…

to indicate the direct object in a sentence.
Наташа любит Романа.
Natasha loves Roman.
Кого любит Наташа?
Whom does Natasha love?
Ты пьёшь лимонад?
Do you drink lemonade?
Что ты пьёшь?
What do you drink?
Мать обнимает сына.
The mother hugs the son.
Кого обнимает мать?
Whom does the mother hug?

Я был в Москве неделю.
I was in Moscow for a week.
Она там ждала час.
I waited there for an hour.
Станислав был на Кубе целый месяц.
Stanislav was in Cuba the entire month.
to indicate motion to a place with the prepositions в or на.
[here, they answer the question куда?]
Аня идёт в банк.
Anya is going to the bank.
Куда идёт Аня?
Where is Anya going?
Они ходят на уроки.
They attend classes.
Куда они ходят?
Where do they go?
Прошлой весной мы ездили на выставку в Париж.
Last spring we went to an exhibition in Paris.
Куда мы ездили?
Where did they go?
