In this post we will discover the prepositional case. The function of this case is to indicate location and answers the questions о ком? and о чём? It also answers the question где? (where?). This case is used only with prepositions, hence the name prepositional case.

| Compared to the other cases, this one is relatively straightforward and has very few exceptions. It’s often the first case, after the nominative, that is taught in textbooks because of this. |

| На доске написанно что-то на русском. Something in Russian is written on the board. |
| Сколько дней в неделе? How many days are in a week? |
| В Сибири бывают суровые зимы. Harsh winters are common in Siberia. |

| –o becomes –e | кресло (armchair) место (place) | кресле – месте – |
| –e becomes –e | море (sea) платье (dress) | море – платье – |
Some examples to see this case utilized in context:
| Собака спит на кресле. The dog sleeps on the armchair. |
| Мы с семьёй отдыхаем на море. My family and I vacation at sea. |
| The ending for this case is almost always going to be –e. Easy right? This is why this case is extremely easy to form. |
With that being said…
| Take extra caution with nouns ending in –ие and –ия. The ending for such nouns will always be –ии. |
| –ие/ия becomes –ии | здание (building) Россия (Russia) | здании – России – |
| В России очень много национальностей. There are many nationalities in Russia. |
