In today’s tip, we’ll look at a simple mistake that non-native speakers make on occasions. So также or тоже? What is the difference? Are they synonyms? We shall soon see.
They both, depending on context, can translate as also, too, as well.
| также is used to add information to what was already mentioned; more simply, if you to express in addition, this is the word to use. |
| тоже is used to add information that corresponds to an already-mentioned subject; more simply, if you have something in common with someone, or even if an item/idea has something in common with the other, you’ll use this word. |
Let’s observe them in context in order for you to fully comprehend what I’m trying to teach you.
Он увлекается плаванием. И он также работает спасателем.
He enjoys swimming. And he also works as a lifeguard.
[He enjoys swimming, and in addition to that, he works as a lifeguard.]
Роман работает спасателем. И Антон тоже (работает спасателем).
Roman works as a lifeguard. And Anton also (works as a lifeguard).
[Both Roman and Anton work as lifeguards. They have this in common.]
Another example for clarity:
–Я играю в теннис и в футбол. И также в волейбол.
-I play tennis and soccer. Volleyball too.
–Ты играешь в волейбол? И Слава тоже.
-Do you play volleyball? Slava does too.
